Why childproof your home?
As parents, we all have the responsibility of protecting our children and providing a safe and healthy environment for them to grow and explore. As with most things in this world, the average home is constructed with adults in mind and not designed for the vulnerabilities and limited capabilities of small children. Additional steps have to be taken to minimize the potential for accidental injury to our little ones. There really are hazards around every corner in every home. According to Safekids worldwide, each year, there are an estimated 3.4 million visits to hospital emergency departments by children ages 14 and under for injuries that occurred in the home. Nearly 2 million of these visits are by children ages 4 and under. Young children are at increased risk from accidental injuries in the home because it is where they spend most of their time. These injuries range from minor scrapes and bumps, permanently disabling injuries, to death. Accidental home injury deaths to children are caused primarily by airway obstruction, fire and burns, drowning, firearms, falls, choking and poisoning. All of which are preventable.
